answer me this…

How do I decide what office to file for?

Many ways:

  • pick the most offensive of your elected officials
  • or the office that has power to change what you want to talk most about
  • or let the group decide for you based on your qualification and/or whether you want to ‘stand’ or ‘run’ for office

What do you mean by ‘stand’ or ‘run’ for office?
Standing for office means that you do the bare minimum required to be a candidate:

  1. File the Application for Nomination
  2. File a form with the Texas Ethics Commission stating you will not raise or spend more than $500 (for county and state level) or $5000 with the Federal Ethics Commission for federal level offices
  3. Let the delegates who will be voting for your nomination at the appropriate convention know your intention to stand for office, easiest way is to tell the person you file the form with and that person will tell the convention delegates
  4. Respond to Voters Guide questionnaires (party members happy to help you with these) – usually the League of Women Voters Guide asks for a 50 word answer to a question

Running for office means you do all the above (#2 only if you plan to raise/spend less than those figures, otherwise you’ll need a treasurer, who can be you according to state law, and file appropriate forms several times during the election) plus run an active campaign up to Election Day in November 2012.

Who do I file the Application for Nomination with?

It depends.

For District or Statewide office:
email or mail completed form to the State Co-chairs of the Green Party of Texas
