Statue of the colonizer removed from downtown park

After years of activism on the part of community members, in particular Béxar County Green Party co-chairs Antonio Díaz and Diana Uriegas, the statue of colonizer Christopher Columbus was removed from the park bearing his name. The removal will be made permanent by a vote of the city council which is expected in August. Our cochairs along with several area activists organized a rally on June 27 demanding the removal of the statue and the renaming of the park. While the protest was peaceful, a brief confrontation ensued between Black Lives Matter activists and right-wing white supremacists who were toting assault rifles and who were being protected by SAPD.
