(Above: Green candidate Pipkin puts the questions to primary season candidates: Commissioner Adkisson & Judge Wolff at Palm Heights Neighborhood Association)

Incumbent Nelson Wolff runs on the record of tax abatement giveaways of your money and generally a dozen years obeisance to the “corporate citizens”.

On Mar 4, 2014 (primary election day) the Calumet refinery spilled jet fuel into the SA River; local media buried the story to protect Judge Wolff & the “Mission Reach” gentrification scam. I filmed this quick youtube video at our Green state convention in Austin and posted it in April.

The next month on May 15th, I began to attend monthly Calumet “Community Advisory” meetings to learn what was what. I talked NO politics & raised only one question: whether the KARNES NORTH pipeline would in itself entail increased production? I was told it would not.

The pipeline was completed in mid-June 2014, and soon production was punched up to 21,000 barrels per day. (Excessive pressure in the lines results in the “dirty flares”–black smoke laden with unburned methane.) We have to surmise Commissioners Court are grandly indifferent how much of the Eagle Ford is spilled into our soil & water and methane belched into our air.

The manager of the facility admits Calumet has no realistic “fenceline” emissions monitoring. Is the infrastructure even theoretically SAFE for the transmission & refining of shale sludge in place of the light crude oil formerly processed?

The powers-that-be are feeling us. On Sep 25th, 2014, I was personally EXCLUDED from a pre-scheduled tour of the refinery–FIVE DAYS BEFORE ANOTHER FIRE IN THE CRUDE UNIT.

The sole explicit reason given for targeting me was the April youtube video, which you can also see on my Texas Green Candidates webpage. http://texasgreencandidates.com/paulpipkin.html WHAT did they not want seen? Confirmation the Presa Street installation is still a decrepit relic from 50 years ago? Does Commissioners Court even care?

Every Southside neighborhood recalls the long history of fires, spills, explosions & DEATHS at the Presa St facility. Moreover, new refineries are on the way, courtesy of Valero & the other usual suspects–the fossil fuel industrial complex (including their financiers) that have totally captured the two major parties.

PIPKIN BROCHURE

As I’ve warned for a year, more local refineries ARE in the works. We now have reason to believe one new facility will be situated in proximity to UTSA Main Campus. (Maybe in City limits, maybe not.) In part, to channel graduates of the College of Engineering–which Valero already virtually owns outright–and to utilize its facilities.

But that is ONLY in part. Build near UTSA, you can bet your booty someone is determined to frack the shale associated with the chalk outcroppings along the Balcones Fault. Again, maybe within city limits but more likely NOT.

Refineries, pipelines, fracking trucks, prospect of local fracking… Add in Bexar’s location as a prime center of commerce for shale development international collaboration. (Mexico shale) The County MUST become involved in planning for our protection!

Neither the Judge nor any other politician will volunteer answers to questions that remain unasked! Join with me to ask the questions.
