The Shriveling State of the Union

Green Shadow Cabinet

The Republicans are right when they they point to America’s 25+ million jobless and ask whether the President is serious in proposing job training as his primary remedy. The Democrats are right when they respond that the Republicans have proposed no real jobs alternatives of their own.

Five years after Obama’s historic mandate, the conditions of the great mass of Americans remains intolerable. And yet to hear his fifth State of Union address, an uninformed listener might think America’s problems are limited and manageable.

The reason for this dissonance is that this State of the Union was not delivered by the man elected in the mandate of 2008. This State of the Union might as well have been given by a robot, or an actor, or a media spokesperson. In fact, a media spokesman is what this President of the United States has long since become. His is a voice that modulates the reality experienced by an ever more disconnected political establishment for a polity that grows smaller by the year.

In this shriveled State of the Union, natural gas is a gateway to energy independence and climate justice. In this reality, student debt is to be solved with counseling and unemployment to be addressed with job training. In this United States, poverty can be overcome by a president who appeals to corporate executives to raise workers wages. In this America, equal pay for equal work is a promise the White House intends to fulfill before the next Clinton takes to the campaign trail.

So few are fooled by this State of the Union because so many have been betrayed by those who sat in that congressional chamber the other night.  When the President introduces a man horribly maimed after ten tours in Afghanistan, Washington wants us to understand that their plan requires our continued sacrifice. And they are right that it does.

There are policy alternatives with support outside of Washington and Wall Street. One is the Green New Deal brought forward by Jill Stein and Cheri Honkala in their 2012 presidential campaign. Putting 25 million people to work and reconstructing the economy from the bottom up . . . that is a significant alternative. And it would mean a different State of the Union delivered by and for a much larger section of the American people.

Ben Manski is Senior Advisor to the President of the Green Shadow Cabinet of the United States.

Earth Day to May Day

Help build the Convergence for People, Planet and Peace over Profit by spreading the word for the Jan. 18 Chicago area launch!  Please forward the email below to your Chicago area contacts and post the facebook event on your page!

Greetings ~

Last week I wrote to introduce you to the Global Climate Convergence for People, Planet and Peace over Profit, a grassroots action campaign that begins with a mobilization this spring: Earth Day to May Day: 10 Days to Change Course. It provides coordinated action across fronts of struggle and national borders to harness the transformative power we already possess as a thousand separate movements sweeping the planet, rising up against the global assault on our shared economy, ecology, peace and democracy.

Thanks to your enthusiastic response and support, momentum is building rapidly.

This Saturday Night, activists, including many Green Shadow Cabinet members, will speak at a gathering in Chicago to launch the project and start building a peacefully rebellious Earth Day to May Day Campaign.

If you’re in the greater Chicago area, please join us. If you’re not in the area, please consider forwarding the email below to your Chicago regional contacts, or post the facebook event on your page.

Thanks for all you do for People, Planet, Peace over Profit!

Let the Convergence begin!

Upward, Jill Stein

Together we can harness the transformative power we already possess as a thousand separate movements sweeping the globe, rising up against the global assault on our shared economy, ecology, peace and democracy.

Chicago will play a pivotal role in this campaign! We need your help to organize events that will lift up local struggles, while building collaboration across movements and national borders.

Global Climate Convergence

Green Shadow Cabinet

As we close out another year of unprecedented crisis and uprising, the demand for deep change is stronger than ever. Thank you for all you’ve done to bring us to this historic moment.

To harness the growing force for transformation, I’m writing to invite your renewed participation in our ongoing work, and in a groundbreaking new initiative of paramount importance ~

With your help, we will continue raising the bar for government of, by, and for the people with our ongoing campaigns: the People’s Budget that would slash harmful military spending and fund dire needs at home; the campaign to stop the Trans Pacific Partnership that spells disaster for workers, the environment, health and democracy around the world; and our push for global intervention in the smoldering Fukushima meltdown. And we’ll work to force these critical issues into the midterm election dialogue this year.

We are also helping to launch the critically important Global Climate Convergence that advances a sea change in grassroots organizing.

The Convergence is a multi-year education and direct action campaign that begins this spring, with “10 days to change course,” running from Earth Day to May Day, 2014. It provides coordinated action to multiply, amplify and build synergy across grassroots justice movements.

As you know, the movement for democracy and justice is sweeping the globe – from democracy revolutions to anti-austerity uprisings, occupy protests; movements for living wage jobs and the rights of workers, immigrants, women and Indigenous peoples; resistance to student debt, school-to-prison pipelines, tar sands, fracking, nuclear power, GMOs and more. The accelerating climate disaster intensifies all these struggles, and provides new urgency for collaboration and unified action.

In fact, the accelerating climate crisis is predicted to make civilization as we know it unlivable as soon as 2050. Current science now points to this as the approximate time frame when warming will reach a critical threshold, (two to four degrees Celsius), causing drought, flood, agricultural decline, rising seas, killer heat waves and mass extinctions sufficient to begin the widespread unraveling of civilization. Clearly there is no time to lose.

This is why I personally am going all in on the Convergence. It holds the promise of unprecedented global collaboration – across movements and across national borders – to harness the energy and power we already possess as a thousand separate movements.

A dream team of leaders from a broad spectrum of local, regional, national and global networks is laying the groundwork for Convergence. This group is now planning the first episode of Earth Day-to-May Day global action for People, Planet and Peace over Profit. This will be the first in an ongoing series of such annual actions, bringing us together to lift up the transformative power of existing grassroots justice movements.

Your support now will ensure a timely launch of this urgent initiative and enable us to begin coordinating a global effort to make The Convergence the game changer it must be. You can contribute online or by sending a check made out to “Green Action” to PO Box 91, White River Junction, VT 05001.

You can sign-up for email news, learn more, and download the Earth Day to May Day flyer at the interim website.

Your support and participation will help secure the green breakthrough our lives are literally depending on.

Thanks for all you’ve done to bring us to this historic moment. With your help, we can turn the breaking point we face into the tipping point we need, to take back the future we deserve – for People, Planet and Peace.

Upward together!

Jill Stein
